It seems that no corner of the video game industry is immune from the mentality of downloadable content. Franchises and indie games alike are offering players opportunities to pay for more pieces of games. These DLCs are put through a lot of scrutiny, but it's clear to see that the trend has now encompassed a majority of the video game design industry, as Nintendo has announced that the upcoming The Legend of Zelda game will include a paid DLC and season pass.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was first announced at the 2016 Electronic Entertainment Expo and lit the world aflame with excitement. Rightfully so - the beloved, age-old franchise is coming back to the fray with Nintendo's new console, the Nintendo Switch. Early looks at the new adventure game are enticing, and gamers everywhere are ready to play. According to Nintendo, the extra content will take the shape of new items, apparel, and quests.
Paid DLCs are not the norm for Nintendo; not by any means. However, it seems that they are ready to embrace this business model. Only time will tell if fans of the series will take this announcement gracefully. Hopefully, Nintendo will provide new content well worth the $20.00 in their expansion.
