It's safe to say that 2016's Call of Duty installment, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, was a hot topic. It was berated for perpetuating the future-shooter genre by gamers before it was even released. While people were bent against it, the game still had an overly positive reception, especially from us here at Game Chop. It preserved the first-person fun, had a great story, and changed things up. We liked it! Nevertheless, Call of Duty fans everywhere still aren't enthusiastic about futuristic shooters. Are there hopes of a "old school" themed shooter about to be realized.

A release published yesterday by Activision explains that this year's new Call of Duty will "take Call of Duty back to its roots." By roots, we assume heading back to "traditional combat" as Activision COO Thomas Tippl said. It's quite possible that the franchise is feeling pressure from Infinite Warfare's poor sales performance, fans' ever-present pleas to return to classic battlefields, or even Battlefield 1's massive success. With Electronic Arts' triumphant blast into the previously unexplored World War I era, Activision will likely return to the 1900s eras of war.

With this in mind, fans may be poised to bring the Call of Duty franchise back into their hearts. While the heart of the series is rooted in World War II, the influence from Battlefield 1 could certainly steer Activision to follow the World War I route. They'd obviously draw some criticism for a move like that, but it's not out of the question.

Game Chop will gladly keep you gamers and readers apprised of any developments as they're made known to us.
