One of the biggest stories from last night's Game Awards is the official trailer for Death Stranding. The most recent passion project of industry titan Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding premiered a new trailer following Kojima's acceptance speech for his own Game Award. The cinematic depicts the very first title from Kojima since his controversial departure from game developer Konami with whom he spearheaded the 30 year-old Metal Gear series. Fans of the developer, writer and director will recognize his handiwork in the trailer, featured below.
Death Stranding stars several notable Hollywood figures including Norman Reedus from The Walking Dead, and Mads Mikkelsen of NBC's Hannibal who is prominently featured in the trailer as an apparent antagonist. Famous horror and thriller director Guillermo del Toro also stars, which isn't surprising seeing as he and Kojima were formerly working on a revival to the Silent Hill series.
Thematically, this game instantly mirrors the style of Hideo Kojima. Del Toro's character cradles a pod containing a free-floating infant. A ghostly tank adorned with blood and entrails patrols a destroyed city as wails and cries echo around it. A squad of skeletal soldiers menacingly proceed down a tunnel as their master (Mikkelsen) controls their intentions with some supernatural technologies. It's Kojima at his most Kojima-esque!
No word on when Death Stranding will be released, but it will be a PlayStation exclusive, following Kojima Productions exclusive deal with Sony.
