What do you think when you hear the name "Red Dead Redemption?" Do rough cowboys and six shooters come to mind? Lever-action rifles and hefty sticks of dynamite? Horse races and five finger fillet? We're guessing that most of these are instantly envisioned in each of your minds. Another question for you - been on Twitter lately? If you answered yes, or even no to that question, then you've likely been seeing the above image all over the damn place. Don't you worry, kid. Stick with Game Chop and let us explain what's been goin' down.

Red Dead Redemption, the 2010 hit from open-world video game mogul Rockstar Games is still hailed as one of the most magnificent games in history. It is a western third-person shooter wrought with narrative gold, the last remnants of the "Outlaw" in turn-of-the-century America and lots guns! You play as outlaw turned forced-lawman John Marston, and you spend the entire game living out your wild west fantasies (note our recent article on HBO's Westworld) in a journey that culminates in the very best of open-world video game storytelling and unmitigated fun, including a legendary and unique online multiplayer. It's simply a masterpiece, and Rockstar just hinted at a sequel.

The image we mentioned was published by Rockstar's Twitter and Facebook pages, and the whole internet has lost it. Red Dead Redemption is currently trending on both sites, and everyone is eager to hear what seems to be an imminent reveal. We here at Game Chop are dedicated to cautious optimism, but a tease this blatant (just visit Rockstar's website) is severely testing our objectivity. While a sequel or further installment in the Red Dead series is likely, it is by no means guaranteed. It will be our pleasure to keep you up to date on this developing story. We're pretty excited ourselves.

Update: 10/18/2016

It's happening. It's really happening, everyone. Rockstar Games, champions of the open-world and creators of Grand Theft Auto, L.A. Noire and Red Dead Redemption have made it official - Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released during the Fall of 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A Facebook and Twitter post shared from Rockstar Games' account made the official announcement this morning. They also revealed that a trailer is hitting the internet waves this Thursday, October 20th.

Better grab your hat and lasso gamers. The pure joy and majesty of the great American West will be calling once more. Look out for Game Chop's coverage of the world's first look at Red Dead Redemption 2 in action this Thursday.
